Leaking historic water fountain is restored above an underground parking garage.
As part of a large plaza deck renovation for a financial institution’s office in Pasadena, California, the consultants and general contractor encountered a difficult task. The historic water fountain in the middle of the plaza deck on top of the underground parking garage had been leaking for years. This fountain had been designed by a famous local architect decades ago and preserving its original appearance was of utmost importance. Additionally, the consultants knew most of the fountain’s original waterproofing and decorative tile would need to be removed as they had been saturated for too long and were coming loose.
Limited Options
TRITOflex installed on walls before coating
The contractor was instructed to remove all of the fountain materials down to the original concrete and start over with new. The concrete was allowed to dry and then repaired. Next was determining which waterproofing membrane to use considering the difficult application and need to install tile directly on top. When all options were discussed by the team and many waterproofing manufacturers declined to guarantee their system for this application, the TRITOflex membrane was chosen. With 1,900% elongation, the ability to install at 80 mils dry in one coat, and high compatibility with thin-set mortar and tile, TRITOflex rose to the top.
Quality Installation
TRITOflex was spray applied at 80 mils (2 mm) dry in one coat and the tile was adhered directly on top with thin-set mortar. The warrantied TRITOflex membrane is able to withstand water indefinitely, making it an ideal choice for projects like water features, fountains, ponds, and planters.
The client achieved a durable, flexible, and green rubber waterproofing membrane that will hold the decorative tile and keep this beautiful, historic water fountain from leaking below.
